The Map Room shows up in the MOOPort when you press the Map button on the dashboard. This gives you an overview of the city. The store icons show you where other players' stores are. The blue star indicates your store. Other locations in the town are represented by other icons, like the Bank icon in Downtown.
All the things on the map are "hot". If you click on a store, you will enter that store. If you click on a neighborhood, you will get information on that neighborhood. And balloon help will tell you who each store belongs to and what they sell.
