Scanning the Image into PICT format
- Put your image into the scanner.
- This machine is much like a copy machine and should be treated that way.
- Do not put fingermarks on the glass plate, and in fact, you will get a better image if you take a moment to wipe the glass with a soft cloth.
- Note: you don't have to scan a photograph, you can scan anything that will work in a color copy-machine type device
- Find the scanner program in the scanner folder, and double-click on it.
- Click the "preview" button
- Use the cross-hair cursor to draw a square around your image, and press the zoom button
- After zooming, use the cross-hair cursor to select which part of the image you want to save (you can choose all of the image, or just a part of the image -- this is called "cropping" an image)
- Pull down on the "File" menu, and let up on "Save As"
- Choose a name for your image, and choose the "Compressed Pict" option for image option.
- Either save the image on your floppy disk, or save it to the Student Folder on the hard drive
- You can now quit the Scanner program, or leave it running to scan more images
Converting the Image from PICT to GIF format
There are two programs available in the student cluster for converting Image formats: Painter and PhotoShop. PhotoShop is easier.
- Launch the PhotoShop Program by double-clicking on it.
- Use "Open" under the "File" menu to open your PICT image.
- You can also use PhotoShop to "crop" your image, or otherwise resize it or modify it. PhotoShop is very powerful, and there are a lot of things you can do.
- Pull down on the Image menu and let up on "Indexed Color" (this is so your image will be turned into 256 colors, which is all that the GIF format allows).
- Press "Okay" for the "8-bit Adaptive" setting (the default, I believe).
- Pull down on "File" and let up on "Save As"
- Use any name you like to name your image, but
- the file name must end with
.gif
or .GIF
- Only use letter and numbers for file names, NO SPACES or other
characters
Uploading the Image
- Use the Fetch program to put it into your home directory on blackbody.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu, but
- The file must be uploaded as
Raw Data
not MacBinary
